The seismic intensity, which indicates the magnitude of an earthquake, has 10 levels ranging from 0 to 7. (Since there are variations between intensity 5 and intensity 6, it results in 10 levels.) Intensity 7 is the highest number that can be represented, so "any shaking above a certain magnitude is classified as intensity 7." However, even though it is classified as intensity 7, there is a range. Therefore, in addition to intensity, we also look at a unit called 'gal' to indicate the magnitude of an earthquake. Gal refers to the acceleration of the earthquake, and the larger the number, the more intense the shaking. This unit is not commonly heard of.
