The lead-acid battery, which has the longest history among secondary batteries (rechargeable batteries), has continued to evolve as a secondary battery that, despite its low energy density, offers high safety and excellent economic efficiency. The lead-acid battery is fundamentally composed of metallic lead (Pb) as the negative electrode, lead dioxide (PbO2) as the positive electrode, and dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the electrolyte. During discharge, the sulfuric acid in the electrolyte is consumed, and as discharge continues, the concentration of sulfuric acid decreases and transforms into water. The reverse phenomenon occurs during charging. Current flows due to the movement of ions in the electrolyte and chemical reactions at the electrodes. Lead-acid batteries can be damaged if they are over-discharged or left after discharge.
