Application Example: Hybrid Cooling Shelter
Hybrid Cooling Shelter
Benefits of the "hybrid cooling" strategy that combines passive and active cooling.
Remote control and instrumentation shelters can benefit from a "hybrid cooling" strategy that combines passive and active cooling. This technology is detailed in an article from Engineer IT magazine (South Africa) https://lnkd.in/grMwYTi. Intertech's hybrid cooling shelters expand the advantages of passive cooling, which is widely used in hot regions. They can accommodate various applications and climates. After addressing issues of price, performance, and safety, the two most critical concerns for operators managing remote and processing plant control and instrumentation systems are typically reliability and long-term ownership costs. basic information
【Passive Cooling System】 It is currently widely adopted in desert areas. In deserts, nighttime temperatures drop to 29 degrees, while daytime temperatures can rise to 58 degrees, making it highly utilized in regions with significant temperature differences between day and night. This system utilizes the cool nighttime temperatures to cool the internal water tank, maintaining the internal temperature below 40 degrees during the day. It is a system that allows for the adjustment of internal air by circulating the water inside the tank without using electricity. During the day, if the outside temperature is hotter than the inside, the system cools the interior with the cold water from the tank without external circulation. When the cold outside air cools the water at night, external circulation begins. For inquiries in Japanese, please contact: japan@intertec.info

Detailed information

The Hybrid Cooling System (HCS) combines INTERTEC's passive cooling elements — a thermal storage tank together with internal and external heat exchangers — with a DC-powered active water cooler. Under normal conditions the passive circuit handles all cooling; the active cooler only switches in as a backup when the tank's cold reserve is depleted, for example during extreme heat waves or sustained high heat loads. This delivers substantial energy savings compared with conventional electric air conditioning while extending the operating envelope to higher temperatures and loads. The system is offered as a high-durability cooling solution for harsh climatic conditions.
-

During the day when outdoor temperatures are high, the external circuit is inactive. Cold water from the tank circulates through the internal heat exchanger to absorb heat from the installed equipment. If tank cooling alone is insufficient to handle temperature peaks, the active cooler (DC-powered water cooler) switches in to provide supplementary cooling of the tank water, preventing internal temperature from rising further. Since the active cooler operates only during peak load periods, overall power consumption is kept to a minimum.
-

At night, as outdoor temperatures fall, the external circuit activates. The external heat exchanger transfers the night-time cold to the water in the storage tank. Simultaneously, the internal circuit continues to circulate tank water through the internal heat exchanger to absorb equipment heat. This overnight external circuit operation recharges the tank with cold ready for the next day's passive or hybrid operation. Because the tank can be regenerated by natural heat exchange with the cool night air alone, the active cooler's total operating hours are further minimised.

The PERI Shelter is a high-specification protection shelter for control and instrumentation systems, featuring passive-plus-active hybrid cooling. PLC and other equipment is mounted on mounting plates and cooled efficiently by thermal conduction. The IP65 sealed enclosure combined with clean-air purging protects electronic equipment against corrosive gases and dust. An "inside-out" operating concept allows monitoring and operation without opening the door, and marshalling boxes and terminal boxes are located externally. The system is shipped as a fully assembled and factory-tested unit, substantially reducing on-site installation work.

This graph shows simulation results from INTERTEC-SIMULA for a hybrid cooled shelter. With ambient temperatures reaching 55°C, three distinct operating phases are visible. In the initial phase the active water cooler operates (Water Cooler works) to keep internal temperature low. During the transition period, the thermal storage tank provides back-up cooling through its heat capacity. Finally, the shelter reaches a state of pure passive cooling, maintaining the internal temperature stably at around 35°C. The simulation demonstrates that even at an ambient temperature of 55°C, internal temperature can be controlled to approximately 35°C or below.

The HCS (Hybrid Cooled Shelter) with Battery Room is a large-format GRP shelter designed for systems requiring high-capacity battery banks (such as 2 V × 2000 Ah cells), including telecommunications base stations and distributed energy installations. As shown in the floor plan, both the battery area and the control/electronics area are housed within a single shelter, with the hybrid cooling system managing the thermal environment throughout. The design meets the high-reliability, long-service-life, and low-maintenance requirements of telecommunications infrastructure and renewable energy storage systems.

INTERTEC GRP shelters have been installed for TETRA radio base stations in the harsh desert environment of the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) region. The shelters are sited adjacent to communication towers and operate as off-grid systems combined with solar photovoltaic panels. Thanks to the high thermal insulation of the GRP sandwich construction and passive or hybrid cooling, communication equipment and batteries are maintained within safe temperature limits in remote desert locations without access to grid power, supporting reliable communications infrastructure.
-

Inside the TETRA radio station shelter in the GCC region, one compartment houses the telecommunications control panels, power management systems, and charge controllers, while the other contains a large bank of lead-acid batteries serving as backup power for the solar photovoltaic system. The hybrid cooling function of the GRP shelter maintains the batteries within their optimum operating temperature range, enabling long-term stable operation while minimising the risks of overcharging and over-discharging.

The SHCC SOLARCOOL is a hybrid cooled cabinet in which an active water cooler is powered by DC electricity from solar photovoltaic panels and combined with passive cooling (thermal storage tank and heat exchangers). Requiring no grid power supply, its off-grid design makes it ideal for protecting instrumentation and RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) equipment at remote sites or in developing regions without electricity infrastructure. During daylight hours, solar power drives the active cooler to chill the tank; at night the system runs on passive cooling alone — a cycle that maintains stable internal temperatures while minimising power consumption.
