How to protect equipment from excessive input.

Excessive input can damage the spectrum analyzer. We will solve such problems. High-frequency measurement and excessive input protection are in a conflicting relationship. Therefore, spectrum analyzers that handle high frequencies generally have an upper limit on the input level for excessive input, and it is necessary to handle signals so that they do not exceed this input value. (In the case of our spectrum analyzer, the upper limit is 27[dBm] = 500[mW], CW average power). However, during line quality investigations in CATV, and particularly when identifying issues during line failures, it is often impossible to know in advance the state of the system being measured. This increases the risk of excessive signal levels exceeding the limits flowing into the spectrum analyzer, potentially causing equipment failure. This concern is not limited to CATV; similar issues are also anticipated in various measurement scenarios, such as electric field strength measurements, frequency and gain characteristic analysis of components using tracking generators, and more. This is especially a troubling issue for beginners who are not familiar with using spectrum analyzers. In this case, we will introduce a simple method to resolve such problems.
