A traditional wooden construction technique that has been passed down in Japan since ancient times. It is a method of joining two boards without using nails, where a bowtie-shaped groove is cut into the overlapping parts, and a wedge of the same shape is driven in to secure the boards. The shape of this wedge is the Chikiri mark.
