The Future of EPAM Artificial Muscles (Polymer Actuators)
The latest technology, artificial muscles, is a joint research project between Waseda University Graduate School and ARV Co., Ltd. When a voltage is applied to the polymer actuators, the electrodes attract each other, causing Maxwell stress to act, which reduces the space between the electrodes. The polymer trapped between them deforms and expands, utilizing this change. For more details, please contact us or refer to the catalog.

basic information
**Main Features** - This is a joint research project between Waseda University Graduate School and ARV Co., Ltd. - The electrodes supplying voltage to the polymer actuator attract each other, causing Maxwell stress to act and reducing the space between the electrodes. - The polymer that is sandwiched deforms and expands, utilizing that change. **Other Features** - Development of a high-frequency MEMS mechanical relay using EPAM artificial muscles (dielectric elastomers) as actuators. - Operating Principle → When a voltage (+V) is applied to the drive terminal, the EPAM artificial muscle extends and the contacts operate (ON state). → When the voltage is turned off, the EPAM artificial muscle contracts, returning to its original position and grounding. - Reason for grounding during OFF state → The MEMS relay accumulates static electricity at the contacts with repeated operation. → By grounding that static electricity, it is discharged. → Grounding improves high-frequency (isolation) characteristics. → Note: The basic operation remains the same even without grounding.
