Second Harvest Japan collects food that is still perfectly edible but is destined to be discarded for various reasons from food manufacturers, farmers, and individuals, and delivers it to children's homes, shelters for victims of domestic violence, and people living on the streets. Second Harvest Japan is the first food bank in Japan. Second Harvest Japan (2HJ) believes that there are at least 650,000 people in Japan living in a situation lacking "food security," meaning they cannot access safe and sufficient nutritious food in their daily lives. At the same time, 6,000 tons of food are discarded every day in Tokyo. If we can prevent this food waste and distribute even a small portion of this 6,000 tons, hundreds of thousands of people could gain access to food.
