Environmental issues around the world are diverse. In the previous white paper, we touched on climate change, but there have been recent examples of environmental issues related to Japan, such as the following: - July 2023: Heavy Rain Disaster in Akita Prefecture [Overview] Location: Akita Prefecture Summary: The stationary rainy season front that became active caused heavy rainfall, particularly in the northern part of the Tohoku region. Damage: One fatality, four injuries, as well as flooding in homes and basements due to river overflow and landslides. - July 2020: Oil Spill Incident off the Southeast Coast of Mauritius [Overview] Location: Shallow waters off the southeast coast of Mauritius Summary: A Japanese cargo ship ran aground in shallow waters off the southeast coast of Mauritius, causing fuel oil to leak due to hull buckling and other issues. Damage: No human casualties reported. It is estimated that up to 2,000 tons of fuel oil leaked. The SDGs are goals established to address not only these environmental issues but also various problems such as poverty and inequality, with the aim of uniting the world in tackling them. This white paper will primarily focus on the efforts and key points of the SDGs related to environmental issues.
