Free membership registrationIn the logistics industry, the following measures are being considered in response to the 2024 issue: 1. Improvement of working conditions Measures to improve drivers' working conditions include correcting long working hours, ensuring rest periods, and managing drivers' health. Additionally, the introduction of machinery that allows for easier handling of cargo, as well as parental leave and reduced working hours systems, are being promoted to create a work environment that is accessible to everyone, including women and the elderly, and to secure human resources. 2. Promotion of driver training and recruitment This includes providing attractive working styles and setting appropriate wages, utilizing younger generations, women, and foreign workers. 3. Efficiency through IT implementation and utilization of autonomous driving technology As part of efficiency improvements through IT systems, the scheduling, reception, and calling of truck loading and unloading have been systematized to reduce waiting times. There are reports of initiatives such as using AI for matching to develop optimal delivery plans and standardizing dispatch operations using the cloud. With future advancements in autonomous driving technology, the realization of a driverless delivery system could potentially resolve the driver shortage. Flexible responsiveness is required. Free membership registrationWe would like to introduce the initiatives of shippers actively addressing the 2024 issue. Relaxation of designated times and redelivery services: A focus on speed, strict designated times, and redelivery services are directly linked to a decline in delivery quality by drivers and harsh working conditions. It is necessary to secure ample delivery time. While these factors raise concerns about a decline in service to customers and increased costs, from a broader perspective that considers the quality of your company until the product reaches the customer, improvements in delivery quality, such as driver greetings, manners, and smiles at the customer site, are expected to contribute to enhancing your brand. Free membership registrationWe will introduce the initiatives of shipper companies that are actively addressing the 2024 issue. Understanding the current state of logistics: By grasping the current situation of the logistics department, it leads to considering necessary measures such as reviewing transportation schedules and routes, optimizing warehouse layouts, and implementing systems for labor-saving. Reducing driver workload: Due to the strong influence of shippers over transportation companies, some drivers are required to perform tasks such as inspecting and displaying products. By eliminating such tasks and reducing waiting times for unloading, overtime hours can be significantly reduced. Reducing waiting times: At receiving and unloading locations, waiting times can exceed two hours, leading to overtime work. It is necessary to consider smooth unloading without waiting times by expanding and distributing receiving hours, as well as implementing a delivery reservation system. >> To be continued If you have concerns about DX in logistics, please contact S.Y. Free membership registrationRegardless of the 2024 issue, we will introduce the challenges that need to be overcome in the logistics industry. Ensuring Safety: For example, it is important to secure appropriate rest periods to prevent driver fatigue and to ensure safe driving to prevent traffic accidents. Therefore, the introduction of management tools focused on safety management by various companies is effective. Introducing Environmentally Friendly Logistics Systems: For instance, the introduction of fuel-efficient vehicles and environmentally friendly vehicles such as electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can be mentioned. Additionally, optimizing delivery routes and considering the use of air and sea transport are also key points. Taking the 2024 issue as an opportunity, let us seek understanding and cooperation not only from transportation companies but from all industries involved in logistics, and respond promptly to improve domestic logistics. Free membership registrationThe 2024 domestic logistics issue is expected to impact shipper companies. <Main Issues Faced by Shipper Companies> Delivery Time Constraints: With the reduction of maximum working hours, the time slots available for shippers to deliver goods may be limited. This could necessitate a review of delivery schedules by shippers, potentially increasing logistics costs. Staffing for Deliveries: The reduction in working hours may lead to a shortage of personnel required for deliveries. Shipper companies may need to hire more staff to secure delivery personnel, which could increase labor costs. Decline in Delivery Quality: It is anticipated that the reduction in working hours will decrease the time available for tasks at delivery sites. This may make it difficult for shippers to deliver goods quickly and accurately, potentially leading to a decline in delivery quality. Given the possibility of these issues arising, it is recommended that shipper companies take early measures such as reviewing logistics processes, adjusting delivery times, and implementing staffing strategies! Free membership registrationWhat is the labor shortage in domestic truck transportation!? With the implementation of labor reform-related laws starting April 1, 2024, the upper limit on overtime work will be reduced, leading to a decrease in annual working hours per person, which will also reduce the amount of cargo that truck drivers can transport. Therefore, there is a need to increase the number of drivers, but currently, there is a continued state of labor shortage. <Reasons for the worsening driver shortage> 1. Labor shortage due to long working hours and harsh working conditions - Young people do not stay due to the harsh working environment - Labor shortage and recruitment shortage - Upper limit on overtime hours: decrease in driver income 2. Decrease in drivers due to aging population - Japan's population is aging - Harsh working environment for drivers - Economic situation: worsening economy On the other hand, logistics demand has been increasing recently, especially for deliveries to individual homes, but the recruitment of young talent continues to be stagnant. Given this situation, it is estimated that there could be a shortage of more than 10,000 drivers. If you have concerns about DX (digital transformation) in logistics, please visit >> S.Y. Free membership registrationThe "2024 Logistics Problem" refers to the issue arising from the enforcement of labor reform-related laws starting April 1, 2024, which will impose restrictions on overtime work for truck drivers. In an effort to address the long-standing challenge of "long working hours for truck drivers" in the logistics industry, the annual limit on overtime hours for driving operations will be reduced from 1,176 hours to 960 hours after April 1, 2024. Additionally, while the overtime pay premium has been 25% up to now, it will be raised to 50% or more for hours exceeding 60 in a month after the amendment. These issues are expected to lead to a decrease in drivers' income and force shippers to raise freight rates. In response to these challenges, efforts are being made to improve the social status of drivers by establishing more favorable working conditions, streamlining loading and unloading operations, and introducing IT systems and AI. The goal of these initiatives is to enhance productivity and ensure that the reduction in working hours does not lead to a decrease in revenue by improving operational efficiency.
