While steam pipes are often insulated, the steam header valves and piping flanges in boiler rooms are often exposed. Don't underestimate the importance of insulating these valves and flanges; their complex shapes have a surface area exposed to air that is equivalent to several meters of piping, and if there are dozens of these, they can release a significant amount of heat energy.
