"Teikakazura" is a perennial climbing plant that widely grows in the mountains of Japan from Kyushu to Honshu. At 5×Green, we receive seedlings from the Bato Forest (Tochigi Prefecture) as part of our efforts to preserve satoyama. The 5×Green System was developed for greening urban spaces with many constraints. The soil that forms the basis for planting uses a high-water-retention artificial soil called "Aqua Soil." With sufficient soil volume, irrigation can be almost entirely covered by rainwater. Fertilization is generally unnecessary. The soil does not degrade like black soil. Since it does not contain organic matter, plants grow slowly. Additionally, there are no weed seeds mixed in the soil, making it difficult for weeds to grow. This system does not require advanced management, but plants are living organisms. Therefore, it is not true that maintenance is unnecessary. If signs of wilting or drying are observed, it is important to promptly water or take other necessary measures. 5×Green has developed a construction method called "pre-cultivation method" that utilizes the characteristics of the unit form. This method involves installing pre-grown greening units at the site in a short time, making it particularly effective for large-scale projects. The grown greening units are transported to the construction site according to the schedule. Since only the installation work is required on-site, the time needed is reduced, and construction costs are kept low. 5×Green primarily uses "Teika Kuzu" on the sides of the unit. This kudzu is an evergreen climbing plant that changes the growth rate of the inner and outer stems when it senses something hard, allowing it to wrap around wire mesh. Additionally, there is little variation in growth due to sunlight conditions, and the leaves are relatively small.
