SPD is one type of "surge protective device" that protects power equipment in power generation and transmission systems, demand devices of consumers receiving power, wired communication lines, antenna systems, communication equipment, and so on, from transient overvoltages caused by phenomena such as lightning. In Japan, the installation of SPDs for high-voltage transmission and distribution systems has been mandatory for some time, and there have been specific standards for them. However, there have been no specific regulations for those installed in consumer demand devices, and their application has been based on the voluntary judgment of each manufacturer and consumer.

The power transmission and distribution system widely implements "combined lightning protection" with "lightning detection systems, SPD, and circuit breakers." While there is a high level of inherent reliability, another reason is its low cost and versatile applicability. The lightning automatic circuit breaker uses a unique lightning detector called "Popov Thunder," which has been miniaturized and fully automated as "Popov Thunder, SPD, MCCB" to be used for lightning protection in general low-voltage receiving equipment and electrical devices. Additionally, if the MCCB is replaced with a VCB, it can also be applied to high-voltage receiving equipment.
