By filling the inside of the hechimaron mat with soil and planting seedlings or sowing seeds, it is possible to cultivate flowers, vegetables, herbs, and more. Since it is panel-shaped, various types of cultivation can be done vertically, on slopes, or horizontally, allowing it to be set up against the wall of a balcony in an apartment or attached to the exterior wall of a building to create a vertical garden, which can also help mitigate the heat island effect. Thanks to the three-dimensional mesh structure of the hechimaron, roots can grow in multiple directions, allowing cultivation with only one-fifth to one-third of the soil typically used in regular pots. (There have been cases where one hechimaron planter yielded two bowls of mini tomatoes.)

Due to the three-dimensional mesh structure, the fiber surface area per unit volume of the filter material is large (2 to 10 times that of corrugated filter media), allowing for rapid growth of the biofilm. The fibers are wound in spiral loops, which facilitates good agitation of the circulating water.

It is a product made from polypropylene plastic molded into a three-dimensional mesh shape resembling the dried fibers of the plant luffa or the shape of instant noodles before heating. Based on the luffa structure, it was named "Hechimalon" and "Hechimax."
