It is defined as a method that consciously applies the unique functions of soil ecosystems within wastewater treatment systems. This low-cost and environmentally friendly treatment method utilizes the power of soil organisms, such as microorganisms that are said to number in the hundreds of millions in a spoonful, and earthworms that are voracious eaters and help reduce sludge, to break down wastewater and odors. Additionally, the soil purification method is based on two main techniques: the "soil cover method," which involves covering conventional wastewater treatment systems like sewers and village drainage with soil, and the "capillary infiltration trench method," which directly introduces wastewater and sludge into the soil to maximize the capabilities of the soil zone. In other words, the term soil purification method is widely used as a collective term for these techniques, and even within the same soil cover method, there are many facilities that combine not only the Niimi system but also standard activated sludge methods and long-term aeration methods.
