Basic knowledge about crows.
Introducing basic knowledge about the habits and breeding season of crows that inhabit Japan!
The crows of the genus Corvus found in Japan consist of two species: the resident Hooded Crow and the Carrion Crow. Originally, these birds lived in forests and agricultural areas, but with urbanization progressing today, they have expanded their distribution into urban areas, establishing an image as city birds. Their wingspan measures 50 to 60 cm. They are omnivorous and their behavior of rummaging through garbage dumps has become a problem. The breeding season is from spring to summer, and they raise their young cooperatively in a monogamous relationship. They build nests by weaving small branches in trees, but they also nest on telephone poles, signs, and transmission towers, skillfully using materials like wire and plastic that are readily available. During the nesting period, they become very territorial and exhibit aggressive behavior towards humans or animals that approach carelessly. They are very intelligent birds, capable of discerning traps and have excellent memory. Those that have had experiences of being targeted by stones or guns will attempt to pick up stones or will flee at the mere sight of an umbrella held like a rifle.
