Beautiful tile "irakato tile" carefully made by a female artist at a tile factory in Minami Awaji.
Awaji, Hyogo Prefecture, boasts its local industry of "tiles." It is said to be one of Japan's three major tile industries. The tile industry in Awaji has a history of 400 years. While iridescent tiles have dominated, in recent years, colored tiles that match Western styles have also been produced. Using the technology of these colored tiles, a female artisan at a tile factory in Minami Awaji has carefully created beautiful tile pieces called "irakato tile." Glazed tiles are characterized by their good color and luster, with minimal discoloration and fading. Each piece is made completely by hand, infused with care, and the warmth and shining sense of craftsmanship can be felt in the work. As an accent for exteriors, it expresses individuality regardless of whether the style is traditional Japanese or modern Western.
