Mechanical energy conversion into electrical energy with more efficiency by interaction between piezoelectric and magnetostrictive films

In recent years, power generation element that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, such as vibration, has been attracting attention. For example, piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials are known to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. However, mechanical energy such as vibration has not been fully used so far. Therefore, there is a need for power generation element that can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy more efficiently.   This invention is able to provide a high power generating element and a piezoelectric-magnetostrictive composite to use for this device. This invention laminates a magnetostrictive film and a piezoelectric film and forms a microscopic irregularity at the interface between them. This configuration increases the frequency of contact between the 2 materials at the microscopic interface area, causing electromagnetic physical interaction between magnetostrictive film and piezoelectric film, which improves the power generation element's output characteristics. This allows mechanical energy to convert efficiently into electrical energy.

Tohoku University Technology: Ultrasound-Assisted Drug Delivery System: T12-021

It is possible to efficiently distribute the drug to the deep tissues of the organs!

A method for injecting drugs into specific areas of the brain, known as Convection-Enhanced Delivery (CED), has been developed. The CED method involves the local injection of drugs under sustained positive pressure. Drugs administered into the bloodstream are limited in their delivery to the brain due to the blood-brain barrier, but the CED method allows for efficient delivery of drugs into the brain tissue. However, the conventional CED method has the drawback of taking a long time for drug distribution to the affected area (drug injection rate: 1-5 μL/min), requiring several days to administer the necessary amount. Therefore, the inventors have developed a device that allows for drug injection into deep areas of the brain and can efficiently distribute the drug. By using this invention, it is expected that drugs can be delivered efficiently to deep tissues of solid organs such as the brain in a shorter time compared to conventional CED methods, thereby reducing the burden on patients.

Able to keep non-volatile magnetic information and to operate at high-speed with low power consumption

 Currently, further improvement of memory storage density is required with the information society development. The magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM), which can record information nonvolatilely for a long time, is expected to replace semiconductor memory as the next-generation memory. However, the performance is lower than semiconductor memory in term of power consumption, operating speed and signal delay, and has a low compatibility with optical information technology.  This invention is able to provide an optical spin device that can store information non-volatilely and operate at high speed with low power consumption, and to provide an information storage device using this device. This invention has a magnetic material layer and a spin defect layer. It can store magnetic information non-volatilely and can operate at high speed with low power consumption. In addition, the information storage device equipped with this optical spin device is able to write and read information at high speed and high sensitivity, and is highly compatible with optical information technology, which is expected to develop rapidly in the future.

Precise Evaluation of Drug Efficacy and Toxicity Under In Vivo-Mimetic Control of Oxygen Concentration and pH

In recent years, concerns about animal welfare have accelerated efforts to reduce animal testing in pharmaceutical and cosmetic development, driving a global shift toward in vitro evaluation methods that better replicate the human body. Microphysiological systems (MPS), which combine microfluidic technology with human cells, are attracting significant attention as next‑generation in vitro evaluation methods capable of reproducing organ‑level physiological functions.​  The inventors have developed a device capable of independently controlling the two‑dimensional spatial distributions of both oxygen concentration and pH. This invention is expected to facilitate understanding of cellular dynamics in microenvironments with oxygen and pH gradients. For example, by reproducing the hypoxic and low‑pH environment of cancerous tissues, the device enables the evaluation of anticancer drug efficacy and toxicity under conditions that closely mimic the in vivo environment of cancer patients. Beyond these applications, the device is expected to support a broad range of uses as an organ‑on‑a‑chip platform. Since this patent has not yet been published, the specification can be disclosed after the intellectual property agreement is concluded.
