However, the technology of the time had issues with manufacturing and processing, making it far from practical. The excellent corrosion resistance of stainless steel is due to the formation of a passive film by chromium and its self-repairing function!
When chromium is present at more than 10.5%, stainless steel generally does not rust in typical environments* (excluding coastal areas and environments exposed to chemicals). This is because the chromium in stainless steel combines with oxygen in the atmosphere to form a "passivation film," which covers the surface like a coating, preventing direct contact of oxygen with the base metal. By the way, this passivation film is incredibly thin, measuring only 1 to 3 nm (0.000001 to 3 millimeters), so it is naturally invisible to the naked eye.
