Learning from Frequent Fire Incidents of Battery Storage Systems Overseas: Safety Measures and the Use of International and Domestic Standards (IEC/JIS)
Our company will hold a seminar titled "The Advantages of Latecomers: Large-Scale Battery Systems Still Have Time."
In recent years, the need for the introduction of battery systems for power grids has increased due to issues related to the output suppression of renewable energy and the need for power system development to achieve carbon neutrality. Coupled with the development of power trading markets and various subsidy measures, a rush to introduce grid-connected battery systems has begun. In Japan, a fire occurred in March 2024 at a large-scale battery system installed alongside solar power generation in Kagoshima Prefecture, injuring four firefighters, which has drawn attention to safety measures in operations. This presentation will explain safety measures at various stages of the design, installation, and operation of large-scale battery systems, referencing global accident cases, and will detail how to utilize international and domestic standards (IEC/JIS) to ensure safety throughout the entire lifecycle of battery systems.
